Baking soda clay handprint

Peanut is at that age where I would love to start doing this type of thing. It'll be a toss-up on whether or not she'll put her hand on it like she should, without throwing a fit though. We'll have to try it out.

Excited little pyro... (grapher, that is! )

http://www.razertip.com/pyrography-pens.htm

I ordered the razertip sk beginner pyrography set. Up until now, I've been using the typical pyrography tool set you can get at any hobby store for around $30.00. That one is fine for the occasional piece but let's face it,  unless you really enjoy feeling like a 4-year-old coloring with giant Crayolas (which I don't), the hobby pyro tool set isn't all that great for anyone who is interested in doing high-quality work on a regular basis. It's cumbersome,  mostly,  and even the ones that come with various temp settings don't give you nearly enough control over the heat. (But for tiny hobby projects, it's sufficient.) So, after long consideration and research, I had decided to upgrade. This unit/brand has great reviews so i am going to try it out!

A warning: since you will be forking out at least $200.00, if not more, for a good pyrography pen/burner, I would advise pyrography newbies to purchase and practice with the hobby tool kit. Better not to spend the larger amount first, just to find out you aren't a fan of the art form!

In other news... fallout 4 is currently downloading. I'm a kid on Christmas morning. Seriously.

Pep-Talk

Okay everyone, it's time for another affirmation:

I am lucky to be in college. Even though I'm stressing for this test, I am lucky to have the opportunity to attend college, when so many other people aren't.

(Insert what you're lucky to have and realize that others aren't so fortunate!)

Chins up, buttercups. We'll get through these stressers together!

Pretty crochet hooded vest

http://beacrafter.com/crochet-hooded-vest/

I actually liked this one so much that I purchased the pattern...which I wish I hadn't. The instructions that come with the pattern are pretty common sense - like how to up- or down-size the pattern from large to small, large to XXL. This pattern does have a diagram, however, that the free one doesn't and since I like diagrams, I'm less annoyed that I paid for a pattern that wasn't as different from the original free one.

I'll post pics when I'm done with it.

Any notes made are in regards to the paid pattern. I'm not working the free pattern, not even looking at it.

Update:

It helps if you read the pattern right. I'll finish this, eventually.

Why Organized Religion Scares the Crap out of Me

Now, I'm not speaking about the type of organized religion that requests its congregation members to come to Church once (or twice, depending on the faith system) a week and on Holidays. I'm talking about religions that are so organized that this kind of shit happens. It is deplorable that anyone would be that far into anything where they would allow their own child to die, let alone a newborn baby. This sentence is far too light and that whole cult needs to be wiped out. There's a place for tolerance and then there isn't. This is a case of "isn't."

I'm not that kind of witch. ..

I'm not sure how aware Peanut is of my witchy lifestyle but today she pointed out the car window and very clearly stated "mommy, top da wain!" To which I replied, "I'm not that kind of witch." I was tempted to start quoting The Hobbit at her but since I already received what could only be referred to as the "threenager dead stare and long-suffering sigh* for my witch comment,  I refrained. She's far too old for her age X-D.

A quick update

I haven't really been on to do more than post a few links lately. Swamped with homework and tests. But I am taking the time right now to give myself an affirmation - and I suggest you do the same, if you are having a hard time of it right this moment. Today my affirmation is:

I am lucky to have the opportunities I have - even if they are a bitch to fulfill. I can do it. (and so can you!)

I will definitely be adding more interesting things come Thanksgiving break (November 23-27??). So, check back periodically, if not then, to see if I have actually had time to surface for a little air.

One thing I have been doing to try to maintain my sanity is creating a crochet slipper pattern for toddler's size 7...a legit size (US) 7. Every free pattern I have tried to create has not turned out (on the part of the pattern creator, not mine. I can follow directions ;) ) so, as is usually the case, I ended up making my own pattern. It's the first in-the-round crochet pattern I've ever created and honestly I have no idea how it came together. Serendipity maybe. Anyway, luckily for me it turned out and is super cute enough that I might make a few other sizes, create an adult size, and sell them on Etsy to order. I haven't decided if I'll make the pattern free to the public. I understand now why all of the cute patterns cost at least $4.00 - because it's time consuming and a pain in the ass if you suck at math and need to draw out the patterns in order to create them. . . like, really time consuming. More than you would anticipate when you start out. So, look for the pattern - and an Etsy account - later. I haven't decided yet if I'll be giving the pattern away or selling it, however. Depends on how strapped for cash I am, lets be honest. I'm not greedy but in today's economy...well, I'm sure you know how it goes!

This post is for the knitters. I crochet baby blankets for hospitals and women's shelters, but I used to knit. I think I'm going to look into any places where I could donate crocheted hats for charity.

ProjectImplicit - a quiz taken for my Social Psychology class

This website is a place where you can take quizzes to find out if you have any implicit (underlying/unconscious) biases and prejudices about certain groups of people, as well as the intensity of said feelings (if any.) My results were that I'm not racist and I don't have any real negative feelings towards Buddhism, Judaism, Islam or Christianity (though apparently I think higher of the first two.)

Update to Slipper post

Periodically check out the post on the Cappuccino Lady's slipper for my progress on this "Easy" pattern. Turns out, it's not so Easy (and I'm pretty experienced at crochet, if I may toot my horn a bit). It's the conversion that's been the difficult part for me, for some reason. And also, I've never made a pair of slippers that weren't designed for a 9 month old.

CAPPUCCINO Lady's Slippers by Luba Davies - Craftsy

OMG finally! I have been searching everywhere for a free slipper crochet pattern like these! Like, looking for weeks. Hello Craftsy, you may just be my new best crochet website friend.

CAPPUCCINO Lady's Slippers by Luba Davies - Craftsy:

My thoughts/notes/tips:

This pattern is a bit wonky if you are used to US hook/yarnsizes. I had to do some searching around to figure out conversions of hook size and the weight of the yarn used is not listed. From what I can tell, after looking up the (non-US company, so you need to order this yarn from outside of the country), the yarn weight is equivalent to a 3 or 4 (medium worsted weight). I'm going to try a size G/6-4.25mm hook with size 4 (medium) yarn. I'm making a size US8.5 (according to this pattern) slipper and we'll see how it goes. The pattern itself looks like it is written in US crochet terms. Since I am working on this pattern, after I'm finished with it, I'll post this entire thread into the "Arts and Crafts" section with my own pictures. If anyone else does this pattern and wants to share pictures of their final product and any tips you have, please feel free to comment or email me.

9/13/15 - finished one sole only to find that the G hook is too small for a size 8.5. If you have very narrow feet, and about a size 7.5/8 shoe, using a G hook and following the pattern for a size 8.5 should work for you. It didn't for me so now I'm going to try a H hook.

Yeah, so at 31 I'm ashamed to admit that I've never used a french press before...until now. I bought it for my hubs last year-ish and while he's used it a lot, I usually just resort to popping a k-cup in the keurig. But not today!

"Stickers"

Peanut found a "sticker" (pad) in her diaper bag and is running around the house sticking it on things. Oh boy.

Lying to the cops is futile!

Okay, this may be common sense to most people but if you are drinking and driving, don't bother lying to the police when they pull you over. They know when you've been drinking or are on drugs! You aren't fooling anyone when you tell them you haven't had anything to drink or have only had one drink. Or better yet, just be smart. Don't drive intoxicated.

Midnight musings...I'm seeing a trend in my posting times -_-

Well, another night of being awake when I don't want to be. School starts up again on Monday so I'm sure the stress of that is contributing to the recent bout of insomnia. Anyway, if anyone else is awake at this ridiculous hour and is looking for something to get lost in (other than this blog, of course, which admittedly you'd have a very short journey since I just started this thing less than a week ago), you might be interested in checking out one of my favorite blogs http://www.theuglyvolvo.com/. If you're a parent, a mom especially, this should tickle you. I love this lady's humor! Anyway, off to do math problems in my head - that usually knocks me right out!

Finished big shell sleep sack

As promised,  here is the finished sleep sack. I don't usually like to crochet certain things in only one color so I kept with the rose and white color scheme of the hat, mitts, and booties. In the original pattern, the creator used one color (golden rod?). I used the rose for the bottom 12 rows, switched to white for the main body,  and then finished it off with a simple SC border.

Yes that is a diaper wipe, no it's not used. Peanut got into the wipes bin again. She likes to "blow her nose" on "napkins". (read: wipe the top of her lip once and discard the tissue/wipe/papertowel/etc. on the floor or anywhere else close by).

*After-thought on this pattern: I'm thinking maybe I'll make an adult sized sleep sack for the couch X-D. What do you think?

Random musings

Bear with me. The later it gets, the more sentimental I get.

Peanut fell asleep in my bed. Nightmares again.  It's the first time since we stopped nursing. .. it's the first time she's ever fallen asleep in our bed when NOT nursing,  for that matter. As I put her into her crib I marveled,  yet again, on just what it means to truly love someone. So this is what true, unconditional love feels like. I mean, i thought i knew what love was, but then I had our daughter and the love I've known (and i do, and know how, to love,  lol) doesn't compare in its purity or intensity. The thought of going one minute without her in my life just about kills me and for the first time in my life,  I have met someone for whom I would rather die than live without. . .
And that's how I knew I was ready to be a parent. ;)

Random musing

Watching the "Steve goes to college" episode of blue's clues and i must say. .. so many feels! How is that possible?!

Neither Peanut nor I are quite sure of how to feel about Steve's brother, Joe, however.

Latest baby gift - Crochet Sleep Sack

Big Shell Sleep Sack, Cap, and Mitts

http://suzies-yarnie-stuff.blogspot.com/2010/08/bssscm.html?m=1

Okay, so while watching "The FBI Files" on Netflix, I decided to crochet a baby gift for a girlfriend of mine. (What can I say, I love true crime shows like teens love Glee. It's not weird...really...) I have a ton of scrap yarn lying around left over from various projects. I have already made a hat and booty set for my girlfriend, but it's summer break, I'm not planning on having another child for at least another year, and there are only so many doilies, blankets, socks, and slippers one family needs. Thanks to what I affectionately term "baby season", I have plenty of people to crochet for. Following this pattern, I worked up a set of mitts and am currently in the process of working up the sleep sack.

This particular set is really easy to work up and I really enjoyed doing it. I would rate this project at probably about a 2 on a 1-5 difficulty scale. The instructions are written in a way that is easy to understand, though I would have liked it if there were a visual guide to follow as well as the text format.

For the hat and booties, I used the "blue and ivory striped hat" and the "ivory and green booties" patterns from Crochet in a Day by Candi Jensen. Instead of ivory and blue/green yarn, I chose to use white and rose for all four items (hat, mitts, booties, and sleep sack).

I hope you enjoy this project as much as I am. Happy hooking!

(Pictures of my creations of this particular pattern are to follow.)
